Tobin Bridge & Chelsea local traffic advisories through Aug. 23

Along with the temporary closure of Orange Street on Aug. 17, MassDOT has published additional advisories concerning the Route 1 Northbound lane shift beginning Aug. 19 and overnight work and closures in the Spruce Street area between Aug. 19 and Aug. 23.

Route 1 Northbound Lane Shift Monday

What and Where: Beginning Monday, August 19, the center lane on Route 1 Northbound going over the Tobin Bridge will be closed for repairs.

When: Beginning Monday, August 19, 2019 for approximately 3-4 months. MassDOT is committed to reducing the duration of impacts, and depending upon weather conditions, may continue operations and related closures throughout the winter. More information will be provided when it is available.

Why: For necessary bridge deck repairs and safety improvements on Route 1.

Route 1 Travel Impacts: From August 18 – August 23, the right and left travel lanes will be open during daytime hours (5 a.m. – 10 p.m.) and 1 travel lane will be open during overnight hours (10 p.m. – 5 a.m.) to create a safe workzone in the center lane.

Local Travel Impacts: Local traffic headed to Chelsea must be in the right lane to access the Beacon Street off-ramp. After Beacon Street, the next opportunity to exit Route 1 Northbound will be at Webster Avenue. From August 18 – August 23, during overnight work hours (10 p.m. – 5 a.m.), the right lane and Beacon Street off-ramp will be closed to general traffic for brief periods. During these temporary closures of the Beacon Street off-ramp, general traffic headed to Chelsea can exit at Webster Avenue. MBTA buses will not be impacted and will operate on their normal routes and schedules.

Spruce Street Overnight Work and Closures Aug. 19 – 23

  • Spruce Street under Route 1 near 6th Street will be closed for night work between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. from Monday, August 19 to Friday, August 23 for structural repairs under the bridge.
  • Signed detours and police details will guide drivers and pedestrians around the workzone via Arlington Street and Everett Ave.
