TAM Legislative & Regulatory Accomplishments

  • Ensured that trucking remained an “essential business” during the COVID-19 crisis; including working to secure extensions on medical card expirations and expedited oversize permitting.
  • Secured inclusion of trucking representation as part of the Massachusetts Business Coalition on Transportation, comprised of the largest and most influential business associations and groups responding to the Commonwealth’s transportation financing and infrastructure needs.
  • Amended legislation mandating the use of sideguards to minimize impact on trucking companies while creating a pathway for creating additional protections for the bicycling community.
  • Amended legislation to ensure important information on criminal activities related to human trafficking is widely available to the trucking community without impacting the operation of trucking operations.
  • Successfully passed legislation into law creating weight exemptions for the use of auxiliary power units. (Section 38D, Chapter 165 of the Acts of 2014).
  • Successfully passed legislation into law eliminating indemnification language from shipping contracts. (Section 8, Chapter 242 of the Acts of 2012).
  • Successfully defeated repeated truck ban bills, which would have prohibited commercial truck traffic on certain routes in the cities of Reading, Milton, Somerville, Boston, Braintree and Pittsfield, among others.
  • Defeated legislation requiring the installation of new diesel retrofits on all trucks within the Commonwealth. Also worked with the City of Boston to reduce impact of City ordinance mandating diesel retrofits for vehicles on City-funded projects.
  • Defeated a proposed truck ban on transporting any hazardous materials through the City of Boston. Defeated a proposed ban on all through trucking throughout the City of Cambridge and successfully negotiated language allowing for truck travel instead.
  • Successfully lobbied against repeated legislation relative to online tobacco sales and the shipment of alcohol, bills that would have burdened commercial motor carriers unfairly.
  • Passed legislation that eventually led to the reduced use of municipal truck teams.
  • Testified against and secured the defeat of legislation relative to mandated contract terms in the rental or leasing of trucks through a study order.
  • Lobbied against and secured the defeat of legislation relative to audible warning devices in trucks despite vehicles being equipped with more advanced technology.
  • Successfully lobbied MassDOT to reverse proposed regulations banning non-hazardous material bulk liquids from the Metropolitan Highway System.
  • Initiated education program for trucking companies and the Boston Transportation Department to assist in reducing ticket costs.
  • Continue to defeat legislation which would have made trucking companies liable in the event of any accumulation of snow or ice on their vehicles during a snowstorm.
  • Successfully lobbied for the passage of trucking friendly CDL license updates and terminal audit legislation, enabling Massachusetts to secure $15 million in federal program grants relative to highway safety.
  • Continuous interaction with the Massachusetts legislature, Office of the Governor, Massachusetts Department of Transportation, Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles and other state agencies.
